Saramago rewrites the story of Lisbon's Siege: only when Mogueime conquers Ouroana, he's capable of going through with the heroic act of invading the Arabic
castle, symbol of the Moorish power upon the city. Saramago hands these letters to Raimundo Silva, a mediocre and bitter book reviser. Whilst reading them, Raimundo feels the strength to come closer to Maria Sara, win her affection and finish his fiction work. This is the last siege to be undertaken – as put by Saramago – the one carrying the solitude lived by Maria and Raimundo.
