The theme, already explored by other authors, including Goethe with his Dr. Faustus, is presented here by Ramuz in a very simple and direct way. The plot is presented by two characters: the Soldier, a simple man, who has a violin among his few possessions, and the Devil who comes his way, in various disguises, intending to buy his soul. The Storyteller completes the framework of the action and, above all, a link between the different scenes.
The musical score was written by Stravinsky during the First World War for seven orchestral instruments - violin, double bass, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone and percussion - and occupies an important place in the panorama of the interaction between music and the theatrical performance.
